Wrexham’s eight-game unbeaten streak in League One came to a crashing halt at Oakwell, as Barnsley secured a 2-1 victory. The Tykes extended their unbeaten home record against Wrexham in the Football League to a remarkable 17 matches.
The home side took control early, although an Ollie Rathbone effort was ruled out for offside. Barnsley’s breakthrough came when Davis Keillor-Dunn expertly controlled a cross-field pass, cut inside onto his right foot, and curled a beautiful shot past Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Howard.
Barnsley doubled their advantage in the 24th minute thanks to a costly error from Wrexham’s Eoghan O’Connell. Max Watters dispossessed O’Connell, setting up Adam Phillips, who curled a stunning strike from the edge of the box into the top corner.
Despite facing a two-goal deficit, Wrexham refused to give up. Steven Fletcher, Paul Mullin, and Max Cleworth all had opportunities to pull a goal back, with George Dobson even striking the crossbar. Their persistence finally paid off in the 80th minute when Cleworth capitalized on a scuffed cross from Mullin, lashing the ball into the net to set up a tense final ten minutes.
However, Barnsley’s defense held firm, denying Wrexham an equalizer and securing their third consecutive league win. The victory propels Barnsley into sixth place in the League One table, while Wrexham now trail league leaders Wycombe Wanderers by two points, with Wycombe also holding a game in hand.
